SUNFISH INVASION PENDING

Researchers at Ukrainian Institute of Southern Seas Biology watch the impending invasion of sunfish looming over Ukraine and Russia. The sunfish will be coming from the South. Scientists don?t like the development, and with reason. The species is well-known for its voracity. It can eat anything from hard-roe to larvae to young fish. It can do great economic harm to the fish industry. This harmful species has already made it to fish farms in the northern area of Crimea. The fish is reportedly doing fine, growing and multiplying at a rapid pace. Its tenacity and adaptability qualities make the spread of the sunfish faster. The fishes of the genus Lepomis originally populated fresh-water reservoirs of North America. The brightly colored fishes were brought to Europe at the end of 18th century to be kept first in the fish bowls and then in the park ponds. Later they slipped into the Rhine, Oder and Danube.
