BURIAL GROUNDS OF PAGAN RURIKS UNEARTHED

Who built the church next to the family churchyard of the10th century Kiev aristocratic family? The pagan burial grounds similar to that were destroyed without any mercy. The researchers with the St. Petersburg History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences have tried to find an answer to the question.

The researchers analyzed the excavation findings gathered by the archeological party of the Archeology Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. They concluded that a huge burial ground was located at the Starokievskaya hill. The city of Kiev was completely reshuffled circa 990 AD. The burial ground at the hill was destroyed during the construction of the church of Our Lady and the walls of ?Vladimir?s city?. However, nearly 150 pagan graves were miraculously preserved. The researchers believe that the only explanation of the phenomenon should be found in the instructions of the client of the construction i.e. the Grand Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich. The remains of Vladimir?s relatives or some Ruriks who died before Christianity was officially adopted in 988 AD might have been buried in the section of the necropolis allocated for the construction of the church.
