He said that a crew should join the station ?somewhere at an altitude of 500 km.? The project includes the landing of a huge Mars exploration rover on the surface of the Red Planet. The weight of just one landing gear of the rover is reportedly 10 tons. As by plan, the rover should cover about 1,000 km of the Martian surface in a month?s time and conduct drilling operations at depths reaching 150 m.
The companies involved in the project include the Lavochkin research and production association, the Research Center of the Moscow Aviation Institute, and the Institute of medical and biological studies. They hope that a number of foreign companies will later join the project. Uspenski said that the management ?is holding talks with the European Space Agency? on the issue.
